Charge the Card

The California Restaurant Association just added one more thing for the food service industry to worry about on top of the heighten volume of business that the holidays always incur, MANDATORY FOOD HANDLERS CARD! Not all counties need to fret on this Jan. 1st deadline. Areas such as San Diego (Awesome), Riverside and San Bernardino seem to already be on top of their game because of prior regulations, but watch out LA, San Francisco, Santa Monica, Orange County.... They are coming for ya! Inspectors will now ask for the card(s). If you don't got em', you're most likely payin for it.

I took the class to become certified a few times in my history of working for restaurants and bars. It doesn't take much time and now that it is in fact mandatory, employees don't have a choice. Employers, it is your responsibility to make sure your people get on this if they haven't already, because it will be you and not them paying for the penalty. The card is usually good for three years because that is when the lamination usually starts to deteriorate. I do believe the cost is somewhere around $15 and shouldn't take you longer than 2 hours. Is your employment worth it? Depends on your situation.... I'm going to go ahead and say, "Yes."

Employers; Get your employee's food handler cards and xerox them, put them in their employee file and make sure that all are currently valid. This is something that insurance will NOT pay for.

These sites will all help you find a location or offer online testing:

Happy Holidays

You have all of January to relax....
